Make your own reusable bag

by

Plastic bags are terrible for the environment, that’s information from environmentalism 101.  They take a lot of resources to create and pollute our planet long after their lifespan is over.

Paper bags aren’t much better though since they create so much air pollution and require an enormous amount of trees to make them. The battle of the bags often tricks consumers into thinking one is more environmental than the other, when in fact neither is the winner here!

So what do we do about it??

There is a solution! The mighty cloth bag is the hero in this situation and it has come to our rescue. Below is a quick story of the evil bag alternatives and how the reusable bag has come to save the environment.

Reusable bags! Yes, so simple, so environmental, and so stylish, if you dress them up for the occasion. On reuseit.com , you can find a bunch of reusable bags, my personal favorite being these 3 pink bags for $21.95, or these mix and match bags for 6.95. If you buy two or more of the mix and match bags, you get 10% off! Both styles of bags got rave reviews, so if you become the new owner of some, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

But fear not! If you want to start using reusable bags, but are tight on cash, let your creative juices flow and create your own cloth bag.

It is genius. We all have old shirts that we probably won’t wear again laying around, so why not make good use of them? When designing your cloth bag, you don’t have to feel limited or restricted to the look of your old t-shirt either. My favorite arts and crafts store, Michaels, makes it possible to spice up your reusable bag. You can tie-dye your homemade bag, write on it with fabric markers, throw some glitter on that bad boy with glitter markers, or  even iron on letters with these bright bubble letters. The styles are endless. Personalize your bag, make it your own. You never know, you can start a trend in your hometown.

If you do end up making the green choice in alternative to plastic bags, there is some maintenance you’ll need to practice to keep your bag looking great for a long time. The Long Beach City Council has some helpful tips for their upkeep and usefulness, such as wash your bag as often as you wash your kitchen towels, keep a bag in your purse/car, and to write “bring your cloth bag” on the top of your to-do list. These easy to follow tips  will keep your bag looking great for a long time to come.

Reusable bags are the future, join the movement!
