The world’s addiction to plastic bags needs to be severed. The build up of these non-biodegradable bags is starting to pose a real environmental threat. The threat is not seen or heard by everyone, but some facts can open the public’s eyes.  Facts that everyone should know about plastic bags are as follows.

  2. About 80% of bags are used between the North America and Western Europe.
  3. Plastic bags take 1,000 years to biodegrade.
  4. As plastic bags biodegrade harmful chemicals are released into the environment.
  5. 267 marine species suffer from plastic bag pollution.
  6. Common animals that are harmed from plastic bags include turtles, whales, birds and seals.
  7. Plastic bags never fully disappear; they just break down into “microplastics.”
  8. Marine animals that mistake them for food commonly ingest plastic bags, which drive them to starvation.
  9. One ton of plastic bags are equal to 11 barrels of oil.
  10.  Plastic bags clog sewer drains, causing sewage back up.
